Pickup driver seriously injured

Taft Police have identified the drivers involved in a head-on crash between a pickup and vacuum truck and are continuing their investigation.

The driver of the pickup, Derik Casparis, 22, of Taft, sufferd major injuries in the accident, including fractures and a head injury, and was flown to Kern Medical Center for treatment.

Taft Police Sgt. Corey Beilby, who is investigating the crash, said he has has not been able to interview Casparis.

The driver of the vacuum truck, Jeremy Gonzalez, 23, was uninjured.

Police said Casparis was westbound on Kern Street just before 8 p.m. when he turned left to go south on Hillard and drove into the path of the eastbound truck.

Beilby said alcohol does not appear to be a factor.

Visibility may have been an issue because the crash occurred right at sunset.
