The West Side Urgent Care is going to expand its hours.
Starting Sept. 3, the clinic at 100 East North St. will be opening at 8 a.m. on weekdays.
The West Side Health Care District Board approved the proposal from clinic Director Donna Warnock Thursday evening.
Starting Sept. 3, the urgent care will begin opening at 8 a.m. on weekdays
It's part of a strategy by the district to start capturing more occupational medicine patients and increasing the urgent care's income.
The urgent care, opened on January 1, 2004, has been open from noon to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends
Weekend hours will remain the same.
Warnock said the public has wanted the urgent care open longer, and the district will utilize the extended hours to make it available for work-related injuries and group physicals.
The district can also use the extra hours to hold flu clinics and group physicals in the morning hours.
Occupational medicine is seen as a new and lucrative revenue street for the urgent care, which is currently subsidized by the district by $30,000 to $40,000 per month.
Warnock said new revenues could potentially make the urgent care a money-making operation.
In the short term, however, the district will have to absorb the additional cost of the extended hours, estimated at about $9,000 monthly.
That will increase the monthly operating expenses from approximately $63,000 to $72,000,
The potential upside of capturing occupational medicine revenue could be a big benefit to the district.
“Occupational medicine is a very very good source of revenue for our urgent care,” Warnock said. “I feel it could really bring our urgent care to a new level.”
The district is going to have to go to work marketing it to the local oil industry, Board President Eric Cooper said.
Warnock said the plan is to be ready to market it late August.
