  • It could easily be said that the Taft 10-11 year olds Little League all-star team was on a roll entering the Section 7 Tournament last weekend in Porterville. Yet, that magic turned into frustration when Taft lost both games and was eliminated from the tournament.
“We played well to win both games,” said Taft coach Les Clark.
Taft’s tournament run started off with an 11-8 loss to Fresno Thursday.
“We played really well, we hit the heck out of the ball,” said Clark. “I was very proud of our boys.”
Taft was the one that jumped out to a 5-0 lead through three innings of play. Fresno bounced back to tie the score at five at the end of the fourth inning but Taft countered with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to regain the lead at 7-5.
The seesaw battle continued with Fresno scoring three runs before adding on three more to win the game.
Manny Chavez had a three run home run and a double in the game to go 2-for-4. Logun Clark was was 3-for-4 with a double, single and four runs batted in. JD. Hall, Reece Hammons, Kyler Miles and Corbin Yaws each were 2-for-4. Mikey White also had a hit in the game.
The tournament didn’t get any easier for Taft Sunday with a 5-4 loss to Porterville.
“We didn’t have the timely hitting like we had the day before,” said Clark. “We didn’t play our best game that day but we almost won.”
Like the previous day, Taft was going up a Little League group that outnumbered Taft. Yet, Taft got the early jump with a 2-0 advantage when Chavez walked, Clark singled and Corbin Yaws got a two run double.
Clark had two scoreless innings as a pitcher. However, after Porterville tied up the score, Taft regained the lead in the third on a pair of hits from Clark and Miles. Porterville bounced back to regain the lead at 4-3.
Taft scored one more run on White’s drag bunt and Hall’s single. Porterville scored their final run in the fifth to go up 5-4.
