Firefighters rescue lizard, cat reported missing

Fire damaged a house on the 400 block of Lucard Street late Saturday morning.

Arriving Kern County firefighters found smoke coming from the eaves and roof vents of the single family home, which indicated an attic fire, Capt. Chris Stroub said.

Kern County Sheriff's deputies had already kicked in the front door and made a quick search to see if anyone was inside.

The house's occupants, a man and a woman, were not at home when the fire broke out but returned late.

Stroub said the fire was confined mostly in the kitchen area.

An investigator was called in to help determine the cause, Stroub said.

Firefighters rescued a large green lizard in a terrarium but a cat was still missing more than 30 minutes after the fire was knocked down.
An engine and truck from Station 21 in Taft and engines from Maricopa and Fellows responded to the fire.

No damage figure was immediately available.
