  • Taft Tigersharks end season with championship

  • Following a successful season, there was no better way for the Taft Tigersharks to end their run than to do well on their home turf.
    That is just what several Taft swimmers did at the Kern County Championships on a hot, muggy Saturday at the Taft High pool.
    Each swimmer in the championship was limited to three races. Cooper and Presley Golling led the final charge among the Tigersharks swimmers with each winning two races.
    Cooper won the seven year old boys 25-yard butterfly and the 25-yard breaststroke in respective times of 21.71 and 24.95.
    Meanwhile, Presley won the 11-year old boys 50-yard backstroke and the 50-yard breaststroke in times of 37.09 and 45.44.
    Antonia Perier won the 10-year old girls 50-yard backstroke with a time of 38.49 while finishing second in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 36.08.
    Bronson Ortlieb had a pair of third place results. The first was in the 10-year old boys 50-yard butterfly where he had a time of 42.09. The second was in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 51.84.
    Ortlieb also had a fourth place result in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 33.78.
    Brooke Ashmore had a second place finish in the 10-year old girls 50-yard backstroke with a time of 41.51 and a fifth place result in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 48.33.
    Julie Heimiller was second in the 12-year old girls 50-yard backstroke with a time of 36.61. Heimiller also finished third in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 40.28.
    Kaylee McDonel, Sophie Dowhy, Mason Gratt, Alex Toro, Brock Heber and Vienna Perier each finished in second place.
    McDonel was second in the 14-year old girls 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 42.34 while Dowhy finished second in the seven year old girls 25-yard backstroke with a time of 26.73.
    Gratt was second in the boys five and under 25-yard backstroke with a time of 31.53. Perier was second in the six year old girls 25-yard with a time of 26.21 and fourth in the 25-yard freestyle with a time of 22.23.
    Toro finished second in the 13-year old boys 50-yard backstroke with a time of 36.06 and fifth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 30.22.
    Heber was second in the seven year old boys 25-yard breaststroke with a time of 27.29.
    Kylie Taylor came in third in the 10-year old girls 50-yard freestyle with a time of 35.84.
    Daniel Velarde had a pair of fourth place results.
    The first was in the nine year old boys 50-yard backstroke with a time of 49.67 while the second one was in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 39.65.
    Brenden Gratt finished third in the seven year old boys 25-yard butterfly before finishing fourth in the 25-yard backstroke with a time of 25.19.
