Macayla Wells, Tyler Terrell and Richard Jennings advance

While the West Side Recreation and Park District's youth track and field season ended last month, Taft's Macayla Wells, Tyler Terell and Richard Jennings continued their journey last weekend when they competed in the first qualifier for the Junior Olympics at Fresno Pacific University.

“I am just really proud of the kids and all the hard work they put in,” said coach Ray Woolridge.

Wells had a first place finish in the 80 meter hurdles with a time of 16.07 and second place in the 200 meter hurdles with a time of 30.61. In the field events, Wells won the youth girls triple jump with a mark of 34'10.

Terrell joined the winners circle for Taft by winning the youth boys triple jump with a mark of 38'9. Even though he fell twice during his race, Jennings finished fourth in the 80 meter hurdles with a time of 16.20.

As a result of their placements, all three of the athletes qualified for the next round in their respective disciplines. The next round will be the Regional meet on July 2 at Fresno Pacific University. If they qualify in this meet they will go on to the Junior Olympics in Sacramento which will take place July 25-31.
