Volleyball team swept in Golden State Classic
A soccer doubleheader Friday highlights this week’s Taft College sports action.
The Cougar women will play Antelope Valley at 1 o’clock with the men taking the field at 4 against Oxnard College. Both are non-conference matches.
The volleyball team, meanwhile, is at Fresno tonight to take on top-rated Fresno City College.
The No. 9 Cougar men scored a late goal Tuesday to pull out a 1-1 tie with Cerritos College in Norwalk in a physical match that took on the air of a playoff skirmish and produced three red cards.
Christian Garcia, a freshman forward from Ridgeview High, scored on a direct kick at 87:28 from the top of the 18-yard box, the ball sailing past Falcon goalkeeper Martin Del Campo into the upper corner of the net.
Cerritos, a perennial Southern California powerhouse, dominated the first half, scoring its goal at 9:55. The Cougars controlled the tempo in the second half.
There were three red cards and six yellow cards handed out and a total of 27 fouls whistled. A red card disqualifies a player from the next match. Cougar sophomore midfielder Fabian Roman will sit out today’s match.
The Falcons out-shot the Cougars 11-8. Del Campo and Cougar goalie Ricky Montoy both had three saves.
Next week: women host Moorpark Tuesday at 1 p.m. and Santa Barbara Friday at 1 p.m.; men host Los Angeles Mission Wednesday at 3 p.m. and open Central Valley Conference play Friday at top-rated Fresno.
The Cougars were swept twice Wednesday in the Golden Gate Classic at San Francisco City College, losing to Shasta College 25-9, 25-17, 25-18 and to host CCSF 25-22, 25-20, 25-22. Statistics were unavailable.
Next week: Cougars host Porterville Wednesday at 6 p.m. and travel to Cerro Coso (Ridgecrest) Friday at 5 p.m.
