Taft wins first game loses next two

The Taft varsity girls basketball team’s return to action this past week has been full of excitement, drama and heartbreak after they started out the Arvin Tournament by losing two out of three games.

With the early tournament record, the Lady Wildcats are currently 6-5 on the season.

Taft roared out of the gates to begin the tournament Tuesday afternoon by defeating Santa Maria 47-29.

The Lady Wildcats had control of the game from the start when the offense erupted for 13 points while the Taft defense held Santa Maria to two points. Santa Maria attempted to bounce back in the second quarter by edging out Taft 11-10.

Taft returned the favor in the third quarter by outlasting Santa Maria 12-11 before catching fire in the final quarter by outscoring Santa Maria 12-5.

Jasmine Miles and Hunter Everson led the Lady Wildcats in scoring with each getting 12. Haley Pulido followed with 6. Miles led in rebounding with 6 while Pulido followed with 4. Everson and Samantha Verdugo each had 2 assists while Kennedy Quick led in steals with 5 while Everson had 3.

Quick, Verdugo and Miles each had a block while Everson had 4 deflections.

Taft tasted their first loss of the tournament Wednesday with a 54-41 loss to Hanford.

Hanford had the momentum in the first quarter with 15 points to Taft’s seven. Hanford pulled away in the second quarter by outscoring Taft 20-10 before outscoring the Lady Wildcats 12-6 in the third quarter.

Taft attempted to get back into the game in the fourth quarter when the offense erupted for 18 points while the defense held Hanford to seven but it was not enough.

Miles led Taft in scoring with 19 while Quick had 13. Miles also led in rebounds by grabbing 9 with 6 coming on the offensive end of the ball. Pulido followed with 7.

Quick led in assists with 4 whole Pulido led in steals with 3. Verdugo led in blocks with 3.

All totaled, the Lady Wildcats had 21 turnovers in the game. .

Taft tasted heartbreak in their second game of the day Thursday when they were edged out 51-50 by Strathmore.

The Lady Wildcats held the early advantage in the first quarter by outscoring Strathmore 15-10. Strathmore chipped away at the lead by outscoring Taft 17-14 in the second quarter to trail 29-27 before outscoring Taft 10-6 in third quarter to overtake the lead at 37-35 at the end of the third quarter.

Taft attempted to bounce back in the final quarter as they edged out Strathmore 15-14 but it was not enough.
