Team erupted for 35 points in the first quarter of their first game

The Taft junior varsity girls basketball team got one final tuneup this past week by competing in the Shafter Tournament. Instead it was more of a cruise after the Lady Wildcats won three straight games in the tournament.

Taft got off to a strong start to begin their tournament by sailing past North 47-13.

The Lady Wildcats erupted in the first quarter when they put up 35 points while they held North to seven. After a scoreless second quarter,
Taft continued to build their lead by outscoring North 8-4 in the third quarter. Taft put the final touches by outlasting the Stars 4-2 in the final quarter.

Bree Johansen led Taft in scoring with 16 while Rylee Mizener followed with 12. Morgan Pulido chipped in with 9.

Mahaila Laulu led Taft in rebounding with 5 while Kyleigh Phillips had 4. Phillips and Johansen each led in assists and steals with 4. Laulu also had 4 steals in the game for the Lady Wildcats.

Taft followed up by cruising past West High 36-5. The Lady Wildcats had the momentum in the first quarter by scoring all eleven points. West was able to break through with two points each in the second and third quarters but Taft countered with five and 15 respectively. Taft put a cap to their game by putting up five points in the fourth quarter while West was held to a free throw.

Strong led Taft in scoring with 9 while Johansen followed with 8 and Mizener chipped in with 6. Mizener led in rebounding with 9 while Pulido grabbed 6. Pulido led in assists with 4 while Johansen led in steals with 8.

The Lady Wildcats continued their strong tournament run by sailing past Golden Valley 40-15.

Taft wasted no time getting going by putting up 10 points in the first quarter to Golden Valley's four. The Lady Wildcats turned up the heat in the second quarter when the offense erupted for 26 points while the defense held Golden Valley to seven. After a scoreless third, both teams scored four points each.

Strong led Taft in scoring with 16 while Johansen had 11 and Phillips had 6. Phillips and Pulido each had 3 rebounds while Phllips led in assists with 3. Chaydin Garcia led in steals with 6 while Phillips and Johansen each had 4.
