Taft edges out Cesar Chavez by one

Usually a team heads home to get better. The Taft varsity girls basketball on the other hand is going the opposite route after edging out the Cesar Chavez Titans 41-40 in Delano Tuesday night.

“It was a great game,” said Taft coach Suzanne White. “I am proud of the girls and the way they played together.”

With the victory, Taft improves to 2-1 in the South Sequoia League.

Taft held the early advantage by outscoring Cesar Chavez 10-7 in the first quarter. The Lady Wildcats pulled away in the second quarter by putting up 11 points to the Lady Titans 4 to lead 21-11 at the halftime break.

Cesar Chavez bounced back in the third quarter when they erupted for 15 points while Taft was limited to 8. Scoring was closer in the final quarter with the Lady Titans outlasting Taft 14-12 but Taft was able to hang on to the victory.

“Our goal for the game was to give Heart and Hustle and have fun and that is just what they did,” said White.

Kennedy Quick led Taft in scoring with 15 while Jasmine Miles had 11 and Haley Pulido had 10. Pulido led Taft in rebounds with 12 while Miles had 9. Quick led in assists with 4 while Pulido and Everson each had 2.

Samantha Verdugo led in steals with 6while Miles chipped in with 3 and Pulido had 2. Verdugo, Miles and Pulido each had a block.
