Bakersfield man was passenger in truck that hit metal container

A correctional officer from the Taft Correctional Institution was killed and two coworkers injured in a single-vehicle accident south of Bakersfield Monday afternoon.

The Kern County Coroner identified the victim as Michael Greg Alvarado, 49, of Bakersfield.

He was a passenger in a 2014 Toyota Pickup driven by Stacey Stuck, also 49 of Bakersfield.

The CHP said the accident took place at 3:45 p.m. on Bear Mountain Boulevard near Progress Road (in the vicinity of Gosford).

Stuck's truck was eastbound on Bear Mountain when he turned it to the left for unknown reasons, the CHP said. It travelled across the westbound lanes, off the roadway, through a chainlink fence and into a metal storage container, then through a second fence and into a dirt field.

Alvarado was pronounced dead at the scene.

Stuck told emergency personnel that he would seek his own aid.

Another passenger, identified only as G. Gonzales, 43, of Bakersfield, suffered moderate injuries and went to Kern Medical for treatment.

The CHP said drugs and alcohol were not a factor in the crash.
