  • (GHMI) — A Peoria woman is accused of stealing thousands of dollars from her parents after she was granted power of attorney rights for them.
Tawnya L. Underwood-Davis, 50, of 3132 Latrobe St., was indicted last week by a Tazewell County grand jury on three charges of financial exploitation of an elderly person.
The most serious charge carries a maximum prison sentence of 15 years.
Prosecutors have been unable to reach Underwood-Davis. A warrant for her arrest has been issued.
Lewis Underwood, 84, is Underwood-Davis’ father. Barbara Underwood, her mother, died July 26, 2011, at age 71.
According to court records, Lewis Underwood told investigators in July 2012 that Underwood-Davis was appointed power of attorney July 17, 2007 for himself and his wife, who was in failing health. The appointment was Underwood-Davis’ idea.
Underwood said he learned in December 2008 that he was $10,000 behind in payments to the East Peoria assisted living center where he and his wife were living.
When Underwood checked with his bank, he found out most of his money was gone. Underwood-Davis told her father she transferred the money to another bank to earn more interest.
Investigators discovered that from July 17, 2007 through April 25, 2012, more than $35,000 was transferred from the Underwoods’ joint checking and savings accounts to Underwood-Davis’ checking account.
More than $9,000 from Barbara Underwood’s individual savings account and cash advances on the Underwoods’ joint Discover credit card also were deposited into Underwood-Davis’ checking account, and more than $12,000 in cash withdrawals were made from the Underwoods’ joint accounts.
More than $6,000 from the Underwoods’ joint checking account was used to pay for Underwood-Davis’ expenses.
Underwood-Davis told investigators she spent some of her parents’ money, but it was with her father’s permission. He said he didn’t grant permission.
