Former Taft College softball coach Don Bandy will be inducted into the California Community College Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame this week at the state softball championships.
Bandy coached softball at TC for 20 years in addition to coaching football and serving as one of the college’s most admired classroom professors. He also was a leader in the two campus faculty organizations – the Academic Senate and Faculty Association.
He began coaching softball in 1987 and a year later his team won the first of six consecutive conference championships. His teams appeared in nine regional tournaments and one tournament championship (1988). His overall record was 387-314. He was six-time conference coach of the year.
Bandy served as president of the Coaches Association and was a member of the state tournament committee. He retired from coaching in 2006 and from teaching in 2012.
The induction ceremony will be held Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the Bakersfield College cafeteria at 1801 Panorama Dr.
BC is hosting the state championships pitting the top two surviving teams from the north and south.
On Friday No. 1 north San Mateo (36-6) will face No. 2 south Mt. San Antonio (40-3) at 5:30 p.m. with No. 1 south Cypress (45-0) meeting No. 2 north San Joaquin Delta (39-6) at 8 p.m.
The winners play Saturday at 3 and the losers at 5:30 with the survivors playing at 8.
