Nearly 7 acres of grass blackened
Fire burned almost seven acres of grass and brush in Derby Acres Wednesday.
The fire broke out just after 11:30 a.m. south of the intersection of Arnold Avenue and First Street and spread south into the fields.
It was contained in less than an hour.
No structures were threatened and the fire was kept out of the oilfields by Kern County firefighters.
Initial reports said the fire was caused by a cutting operation but that couldn't be immediately confirmed.
Kern County firefighters from several stations on the West Side assisted by a BLM engine from the Midway Station in Taft were dispatched to the blaze.
