Suspect drove up to 100 miles per hours, police say

A Taft man led police on a high speed chase in a loop from Airport Road near east Woodrow Street up through the Honolulu Hills to Highway 119 and back to Taft Wednesday afternoon.

the suspect, identified as David Wilkerson, 36, of Taft now faces charges of driving under the influence, evading arrest in a vehicle and resisting arrest.

The chase, which reached speeds of 80 to 100 miles per hour at times, started when Taft Police received a report of a possible drunk driver on Airport Road just after 3 p.m..

An officer located the vehicle northbound on Airport driving at "a high rate of speed and...weaving back and forth in the roadway."

When the officer tried to make an enforcement stop, the vehicle continued north on Airport.

It went north to Highway 119, then west on Highway 119 back to Taft at high speed.

As the vehicle entered town, speeds slowed, according to police.

The car turned east of Highway 119 at East Kern, then the driver pulled into a garage on the 300 block of East San Emidio where the driver was arrested.

Police said there was a strong odor of alcohol on Wilkerson when he was arrested.
