Even cooling center left without power
Power went out to almost 1500 PG&E customers in the Taft area shortly before 1 p.m. as temperatures hit the 100 degree mark.
The outage cut power to almost all of Ford City, including the Veterans Building, the area's designated cooling center which was scheduled to open at 1 p.m
No immediate reason was given for the outage, but the Kern County Fire Department was dispatched to the area of the 300 block of Adams for a report of an explosion possibly related to the outage.
A truck checked the area but found no hazards.
PG&E said the outage started at 12:50 p.m. and power should be restored by 4:15 p.m.
A total of 1,474 customers lost power, according to the utility.
The outage came on what is going to be the hottest day of the year so far with an expected high of 106 degrees in Taft.
