Attorney grew up in Taft. He was running in 109 degree heat.

A Bakersfield attorney who grew up in Taft died Tuesday evening after running in a five kilometer race in extreme heat.

The Kern County Coroner said Benjamin Greene, 48, died at 8:32 p.m. at Kern Medical Center.

Greene was running in the 5K race at Hart Park when he began suffering medical problems and became unresponsive, the coroner said.

The Bakersfield Californian reported that Greene was running in 109 degree heat between 5 and 6 p.m. when he went to a first aid station and collapsed while undergoing treatment.

An off duty firefighter performed CPR on Greene until he was transported to Kern Medical, the Californian said.

Greene's father Dr. Don Greene was dean of instruction at Taft College for several years and his mother was a teacher in the Taft City School District.
