Suspect faces 15 years to life for killing Frankie De La Cruz
Second-degree murder charges have been filed against the man accused of killing a Taft man in a head-on collision in Southwest Bakersfield on July 16.
The suspect, Carlos Bonifacio Garcia, 27, made his first court appearance on Thursday.
He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment to charges of murder, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, two counts of felony drunk driving and driving with a suspended license.
If convicted of the murder charge, he could face a prison term of 15 years to life.
He is accused of DUI and allowing his vehicle to veer into oncoming traffic and collided with De La Cruz' truck on Highway 119 just west of Stine Road.
Garcia is being held on $1,050,000 bail.
He is scheduled to be back in court on July 31 and his preliminary hearing is set for Aug. 1.
