Man drowned about 20 feet off shore

 The body of an apparent drowning victim was recovered at the Buena Vista Aquatic Recreation Area Thursday evening.

The Kern County Sheriff's Search and Rescue team recovered the body at about 6:50 p.m., more than four hours after emergency crews were sent to the lake for a report of a man who went underwater and never resurfaced.

According to reports from the scene, the victim was a 23-year-old man who couldn't swim.

He was about 20 feet off shore when he went under the water about 2:40 p.m.

The victim's identity and hometown has not been released.
