At least five homes burned

A major fire is burning in the Lake Isabella area and equipment from the Taft area is rushing to the scene Saturday afternoon.

At least five homes have been destroyed, hundreds of people are being evacuated and firefighters from all over the region are responding

The fire broke out about 1:20 p.m. the community of Wofford Heights on Evans Road (Highway 155) west of Lake Isabella and by 3 p.m. the Kern County Fire Department was reporting five houses burned and dozens more threatened.

At least 10 engines were being sent from metro Bakersfield to help protect structures and at 3:15 p.m. equipment from Station 22 in Maricopa and Station 23 in Fellows was dispatched.

According to reports from the scene the fire was burning to the east along Evans Road and spreading rapidly through homes.

Fire engines from Ventura County and air tankers from several bases in central California, including Paso Robles, have sent to the fire as well.
