College to honor its biggest benefactors

Taft College is going to rename its library in honor of Opal Smith and Harry Wilson.

That surprise announcement came Thursday evening at a champagne toast at the Black Gold Coffee House and Deli in memory of Harry Wilson, who left the college his entire $1.6 million estate when he passed.
Wilson and his Aunt Opal are the college's biggest benefactors.

Taft College Superintendent-President Dr. Deb Daniels said members of the West Kern Community College District Board of Trustees indicated they are in support of the idea and will vote formally Wednesday evening at 6 p.m..

Together Smith and Wilson donated $1.7 million to the College.
Some of that funding will go to support pay the salary of the Taft College Foundation executive director and most will go to scholarships and Taft College programs.
