Cafeteria sustained minor damage in early morning fire. School will reopen on Monday
Classes at Parkview School were cancelled for Friday after an early morning fire in the school's cafeteria.
The fire caused some minor damage to the cafeteria, located on the east end of the school.
The fire broke out about 5:30 a.m., and was quickly controlled by Kern County firefighters.
About an hour later, parents were notified by phone that classes were cancelled.
Although damage was minor, smoky conditions caused school officials to cancel all classes for the day, Taft City School District Supt. Julie Graves said.
Classes will resume on Monday.
"The school has received all of the clearances it needed to re-open for business as usual on Monday. We appreciate the understanding of students, parents and staff and thank the Kern County Fire Department for their quick response," Graves said in a statement Friday morning.
