Drug valued at about $25,000 was about to be mailed out of state, police say
Taft Police said they seized 22 pounds of marijuana that was apparently about to be dropped to be mailed and arrested a New Cuyama man on drug trafficking and weapons charges Wednesday.
The drug has an estimated street value of around $25,000, officers said.
Police also seized more than $14,500 in cash.
Police were responding to a report of a man with a gun in the parking lot at the United States Post Office on the 400 block of North Street when they contacted Drew Barnhart, 23, Chief of Police Ed Whiting said.
They asked him about the gun.
Barnhart told them there was a gun on the front seat of his Hyundai Sonata.
When officers went to look they found a loaded 9mm handgun and also smelled the marijuana, Whiting said.
Whiting said Barnhart's intent was to mail the marijuana out of state.
The drugs were being carried in a satchel and cardboard boxes, officers said.
Barnhart was taken into custody and booked into the Taft Jail and charged with possession or transportation of a large quantity of marijuana with an enhancement for being armed while in possession of drugs.
His bail had not been set yet.
