Travis Derrick charged with starting fire that damaged duplex in October

Kern County Fire Department arson investigators made another arrest in connection with a recent outbreak of arson fires.

Travis Wesley Derrick is charged in connection with a fire on the 200 block of D Street on Oct. 18, KCFD spokesman Capt. Jason Knaggs confirmed.

He faces two felony arson counts related to the fire that damaged a vacant duplex.

That fire was the latest in a series of fire that broke out in vacant structures in South Taft and Taft Heights.

Derrick was arrested on Oct. 21 and charges were filed on Nov. 1, according to the Kern County Superior Court website.

He was arraigned in Lamont on Friday.

A pretrial hearing is scheduled for Thursday and a preliminary hearing is set for Nov. 17.

Derrick's arrest is the second in less than a month related to structure fires in the Taft area.

Zachary Hodges was arrested on Sept. 29 in connection with a fire on the 300 block of Naylor that destroyed a vacant structure and damaged an adjacent occupied home.

He pleaded no contest to unlawfully starting a fire and was sentenced to 12 days in jail.
