He told firefighters house filled up with smoke and he ran out

A man escaped from a Ford City home last night just before it was destroyed by fire.
The blaze started just before 9:30 p.m. in the 300 block of Tyler Street.

Kern County Fire Department Battalion Chief John Savarese said the occupant was up and awake when the house started filling with smoke.
He fled the house safely before it was engulfed in fire, Savarese said.

A neighbor said a dog also escaped.
The fire was knocked down in about 30 minutes.

An engine from Taft and engines from Fellows and Maricopa responded to the fire.

No damage figure was immediately available but the home "pretty much destroyed," Savarese said.
