It was third fire in recent years in old shop complex frequented by transients

A spectacular fire destroyed a vacant building frequented by transients on Highway 119 just south of East Kern Street Saturday morning.
The fire broke out in a long-vacant shop complex on the east side of the Highway across from Veterans's Park.

Th wood-frame building was completely engulfed in flames when Kern County firefighters arrived just before10 a.m. and there was nothing to save.

As they knocked down the last of the fire, they were able to push the charred frame to the ground.

Today's fire was the was the third major blaze there in recent years.

A May 2016 fire destroyed a vacant house, and another shop was destroyed several years earlier.
The area is frequented by transients and some area residents.

Police said they have removed people trespassing there on numerous occasions.

The cause is under investigation.
