Officers believe man was trying to syphon gas for stolen pickup
Taft Police arrested another vehicle theft suspect last week after a brief foot chase.
Officers responding to a report of suspicious circumstances in the alley behind Victor Street at Suzanne Lane on Dec. 27 found a pickup reported stolen earlier in the day.
They then found a suspect nearby and believe he may have been trying to syphon gas from another vehicle for the stolen truck.
Sgt. Corey Beilby said officers were told the suspect was in Sandy Creek when they arrived, and they subsequently spotted him in the parking area of the mortuary on the south side of the ditch.
Beilby said he was apparently trying to syphon gas from a vehicle there to put into the stolen Chevrolet Silverado, which had been reported stolen from the 100 block of East Lucard Street.
When officers attempted to contact the suspect, he fled southbound on Fourth Street but was caught a block away in the area near a medical clinic.
He was identified as Cleo Hunter 23, of Taft.
Hunter was charged with vehicle theft, possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of burglary tools, tampering with a vehicle and resisting arrest.
He is being held on $16,000 bail and is due back in court for a preliminary hearing on Jan. 9.
