Stolen cars recovered in Valley Acres, Maricopa

The Kern County Sheriff's Office continues to get stolen car reports in the Taft area almost daily, but deputies did arrest three people and recovered two stolen vehicles during Christmas week.

The arrests included a man and woman from Taft found in a stolen car in the Valley Acres area on Dec. 29 and a Washington man arrested after a foot chase in Maricopa on New Year's Day, Sgt. Kevin George said.

Deputies responded to Valley West road west of Valley Acres early on Dec. 29 after receiving a report of a suspicious vehicle.

They located a car, which was reported stolen out of Bakersfield.

Two people initially refused to exit the vehicle, and, after additional officers arrived, the couple was taken out of the vehicle and arrested.

They were identified as Bradly Glynn Wilkerson, 39, and Taylor Rae Rodriquez, 25.

Wilkerson was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of pepper spray by a felon.

Rodriguez was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of a controlled substance and possession of controlled substance paraphernalia.

Both remained in custody after their arrest and are scheduled to be in court on Jan. 18.

On New Year's Day, deputies responded to a report of a disturbance on the 800 block of Merced Street in Maricopa when they located a stolen vehicle, George said.

As they approached, they saw a man get into the vehicle, then exit it and flee on foot as deputies neared him.

They gave chase in a foot pursuit through yards on Merced before the suspect broke a window to enter a detached garage behind a home.
As he ran out a door of the garage, George said, he was confronted by the homeowner who yelled at him and gave chase, alerting deputies to the suspect's location.

They eventually caught up with the suspect, identified as Brett Helgeson, 23.

Helgeson was charged with resisting arrest, possession of a stolen vehicle and trespassing.
