Suspect charged with armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon

Taft Police said one man has been arrested in connection with an armed robbery and assault on two people on the 600 block of Sixth Street snd more suspects are being sought for questioning.

The suspect was identified as Steven Burell, 19.

He is charged with second degree robbery and assault with a deadly weapon.

Sgt. Robert Gomes said officers were called to the 600 block of Sixth Street (between San Emidio and Woodrow) just before 3 p.m.

They found two people, a man and a woman, who said they were attacked and cash was stolen.

At least one of the victims was injured in the attack but both declined hospital treatment, Gomes said.

Less than an hour later, police arrested Burell in the 600 block of North Street.

He was later taken to the Kern County Jail and is being held on $50,000 bail, according to the Kern County Sheriff's website.

He is scheduled to make a court appearance on Monday in Lamont.
