Travis Derrick will be sentenced on Feb. 21
A Taft man arrested in connection with two arson fires in Taft in late 2017 will be sentenced on Feb. 21 after he pleaded no contest to one felony arson count.
Travis Wesley Derrick 34, had faced a total of four counts from two fires, one in Taft Heights in late October and a second one at a downtown apartment in November.
Derrick was first arrested by Kern County Fire Department arson investigators on October 21, three days after a small fire broke out in a vacant duplex on the 200 block of D Street.
Three weeks later, on Nov.13, he was arrested again by arson investigators and charged for another fire.
In this case, he was accused of setting a trash dumpster on fire next to an apartment building on the 200 block of Fifth Street.
Derrick pleaded no contest to arson in connection with the D Street fire and the other counts from the downtown fire were dismissed, according to Kern County Superior Court records.
Derrick has been held on $120,000 bail since his second arrest.
