Father and son died in shooting

The father and son found dead in a California Valley home last week died in a murder-suicide, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff coroner's unit announced on Wednesday.

The father, Edward Chavez Mendoza, 70, died from a single gunshot wound to the chest and his death was ruled a homicide.

The son, Edmundo Eduardo Mendoza Jr., 37, died from a single gunshot wound to the head and his death was ruled a suicide.

The men were found dead inside a house on Arrow Bear Trail in rural eastern SLO County on Jan. 29.

The SLO Sheriff said deputies had responded to numerous calls at the house since 2012 and three of calls resulted in a person with mental health issues being taken into protective custody.
