Suspect chased woman on 500 block of Kern Street
Taft Police arrested a man and recovered a large knife and machete after a pedestrian told officers he threatened and chased her on a sidewalk near downtown Saturday night.
The victim, a 19-year-old woman whose name was not released, said she was walking in the 500 block of Kern Street about 8 p.m. when the suspect, identified as Robert Chavez III of Taft, approached her from behind and told her to stop, Capt. Shad Swanson said.
She ignored him at first and walked away, but the suspect followed. When she looked back, she saw the suspect "holding a large knife over his head," Swanson said, and she ran away. The suspect followed for a short time, and then stopped.
The victim called police when was she was far enough away from the man. Officers responded and detained Chavez at gunpoint. Officers then found a 13-inch long kitchen knife and a 23-inch machete. Chavez, 36, was booked on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, brandishing a deadly weapon and public intoxication.
