The Siskiyou Flyfishers are sponsoring a Siskiyou County youth to Fish Camp, July 9–13. This offer is for boys and girls, between 10–15 years of age.

“Imagine your child rising every morning to the smell of bacon, eggs, and hot chocolate wafting through the woods of the beautiful high country. Meals at FishCamp are plentiful, and healthy, with three squares a day. Our cooks work hard every day to ensure that our campers enjoy tasty, nutritious food,” stated Rick Meredith of The Siskiyou Flyfishers. This scholarship is sponsored by the Fly Shop in Redding, California. The camp is located on Antelope Creek Ranch, on the eastern slope of Mt. Shasta. A scholarship such as this usually has a price tag of $795, stated Meredith.

A weekly itinerary, with plenty of fishing time every day, includes workshops on a variety of different aspects of fly fishing, fly tying in the evenings after dinner, and stories and S’Mores around the campfire each night. Some of the lessons include:

• Fly casting (roll cast, overhead fly cast, false casting, shooting line)

• Fly tying (many kids even catch fish on their own hand-tied flies)

• Knots (Improved Clinch, Double Surgeon’s, Perfection Loop)

• Basic entomology and what fish eat

• Reading the water

• Safe wading techniques

• Catch and release rainbow and brown trout in local stream and lakes

• Leave-No-Trace
