Victims were in Honda Civic going eastbound on Highway 166
Details are being released about a double-fatal head-on collision in New Cuyama Sunday.
The California Highway Patrol said the driver of a Honda Civic veered into an oncoming Freightliner tractor pulling an oil tank on Highway 166 near Hubbard Street, killing both the driver and a passenger and injuring the truck driver.
The names of the fatalities, a 52-year-old male driver and female passenger, have not been released.
The truck driver was identified as Hector Arias, 64, of Shafter.
He was airlifted to Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara with abdominal injuries.
The CHP said the Civic was eastbound on Highway 166 and the truck was westbound at 3:57 p.m. when the crash occurred.
"For unknown reasons, the driver of the Honda Civic traversed a two-way left turn lane and entered the westbound traffic lane, directly in the path of the 2013 Freightliner," the CHP said. "Before Farias could take evasive action, the two vehicles struck in a head-on collision."
Neither of the two people in the Honda were using safety restraints.
The woman was ejected.
Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
After the collision, the Freightliner went out of control through a wooden fence and ended up on Primero Street.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
It is unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor.
