Man pulled from car by passersby

A man was seriously injured when his car crashed into a tree and burst into flames on Basic School Road Tuesday evening.

The victim was pulled from the burning car by a passerby before the flames spread to the passenger compartment and suffered moderate to major injuries, Kern County firefighters and a California Highway Patrol officer said.

A medivac helicopter was on stand-by for the crash but it was cancelled and the man was taken by ground ambulance to Kern Medical for treatment.

The took place about 5:45 p.m.

The car went off Basic School Road just south of the intersection with Copus Road, down a short embankment and into an orchard where it struck the tree and caught fire.
