Taft man charged with first degree murder in shooting of David Steelman

Bobby Gene Sherrell was ordered to stand trial on a first degree murder charge after a preliminary hearing Friday.

He is accused of shooting and killing David Steelman, 31, in the early morning hours on June 13 on the 600 block of Crystal Street.

Sherrell, 38, has pleaded not guilty.

According to court documents, a witness called Kern County Sheriff's detectives and identified Sherrell as the shooter. The witness told investigators that he was in a car Sherrell was driving down Crystal Street about 5:30 a.m. when they apporached Steelman walking in the road.
The car slowed at it approached Steelman and Steelman hit the driver's side window with his hand.
Sherrell then grabbed a .38-caliber revolver and fired through he window, striking Steelman in the chest before speeding away.

Sherrell is being held on $1 million bail.

He is scheduled to be arraigned on Aug. 20.
