Bakersfield man, 18, died near Buttonwillow

The Kern County Coroner has identified the victim of Monday morning's traffic accident near Buttonwillow as Antonio Rocha-Valdez, 18, of Bakersfield.

The California Highway Patrol said Rocha-Valdez was driving an oilfield bucket truck westbound on Highway 58 east of Corn Camp Road at approximately 55 miles per hour.

For unknown reasons, the CHP said, he allowed truck to drift partially onto the dirt shoulder of westbound State Route 58.

The CHP said the driver abruptly steered to the left, causing the truck to cross both traffic lanes and partially enter the dirt shoulder of eastbound lanes. The driver overcorrected to the right which caused the vehicle to overturn and come to rest on its drivers side, blocking both the eastbound and westbound traffic lanes of the highway.

Rocha-Valdez was not wearing a seatbelt and was partially ejected from the vehicle.
