A new insurance agency is planning a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony on next Wednesday from noon-3 p.m.
The Edward J. Herrera agency is opening at 420 Center St., 661-745-4920.
"I have been connected to Taft for many years," he said. "My wife, Cathie Ong-Herrera, is a graduate of Taft College also a graduate of TC's excellent dental hygiene program."
The Edward J. Herrera Insurance Agency was established in 1974 with Farmers Insurance Group of insurance companies in the San Gabriel Valley of Southern California. The agency had a successful 22-year career with Farmers. Herrera also was appointed District Manager with 13 agents in the district.
He was offered a contract with Calfarm Insurance Company, a small regional insurance carrier based in Sacramento. Calfarm specialized in agriculture insurance and small businesses.
Later Calfarm was purchased by Allied Insurance, giving the independent agent a broader scope of insurance products to offer the clients. As an independent agency the firm "can offer the client the best selection of insurance from some of the most pre-eminent insurance companies in California."
They write personal auto and homeowners, business owners insurance for restaurants, retail stores, and automotive repair shops.
The agency writes workers compensation as well group health insurance and individual health, the agents are Certified Application Assistants for Healthy Families.
Herrera is also a "Select Broker" for doctor's insurance and professional underwriters liability insurance, specializing in medical malpractice insurance for doctors and allied personnel.
Ed Herrera currently serves on several boards in the county.
He is president of the County of Kern Human Relations Commission, vice president of the Betty Ong Foundation (09-11-01 hero), board member and past president of the Hispanic Excellence Scholarship Fund at CSUB. Past Director Bakersfield City School District Education Foundation, past board member of Governors Director Good Samaritan Hospital.
