West Side Cemetery will unveil its new flagpole saluting those who serve in the military at Monday’s annual Memorial Day Observance.
“We’ve installed a memorial flagpole that was completed just last Saturday and will be dedicated on Memorial Day,” said Joel Bauer, manager of the West Side Cemetery District. “It turned out real well. It’s everything I hoped it would be and then some. We’re pretty proud of it.”
The base of the new pole represents all five branches of the military – Army, Air Force, Marine Corps, Navy and Coast Guard.
It’s inscription reads: “Dedicated to the men and women who faithfully serve.”
Monday’s traditional service begins at 10 a.m.
Bauer will emcee the program, which will feature an address by Gay Summers, who served the Army in Panama in 1966-68.
The traditional floral tributes include:
Red Flower of Courage, presented by Steve Burnham (Air Force, 1965-69); White Flower of Purity, presented by Ron Maddox (Marines 1963-67); and Blue Flower of Truth, presented by Roy McMenamin (Air Force 1963-66).
Summers will lay the Wreath of Remembrance and Navy veteran Ted Bonner will present the POW/MIA Remembrance.
The Lincoln Junior High Lion Pride Band will play the “Star Spangled Banner” and “God Bless the USA.”
Pastor Magana and Thomas Keast will play taps and bagpiper Dee Dee Stoller will return again this year.
The American Legion Post No. 63 firing squad, under the direction of Sgt. Ray Mortimer, will present the 21-gun salute.
Josh Tofte will deliver the invocation and benediction.
Bauer said others playing important roles in preparing and presenting the annual observance include Charles and Jennifer Landwehr of Erickson and Brown Funeral Home, Brian and Laurie Porteous of West Side Memorial Services, Neal and Pat Finney, and district staff Nick Ward (foreman), Greg Oliver, Gerardo Figueroa and Cole Watkins.
