Taft, Calif. -

Firefighters nearly have the Lebec fire completely surrounded, a Kern County Fire Department spokesman said about 3:20 p.m. Monday.

Firefighters estimate roughly 65 acres have burned and the fire is almost completely contained.

About 15 homes were threatened for a time.

About 70 Kern County firefighters, assisted by the Bureau of Land Management, Los Angeles County, Cal Fire and United States Forest Service, are working on the fire.

Air tankers that dropped fire retardant on the fire have been sent back to the base, the KCFD spokesman said.

The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental, and may have been caused by a trailer that broke away from the vehicle towing it.

It broke out about 11:40 a.m. and two engines from the Taft area, one from the BLM, and another from the KCFD, responded.
