A mother and her three children are being treated for smoke inhalation after they barely escaped from a fire that destroyed the part of a duplex they were staying in early Tuesday.
The mother and children, two girls age 5 and 6 and a boy age 9 were all taken to Bakersfield hospitals for treatment.
The family was staying in the rear section of a duplex at 409 South Sixth Street.
Their identities were not released.
The fire was reported at 12:52 a.m.
Kern County Fire Department Battalion Chief Brent Moon said the mother was the most seriously inured.
She may have suffered inhalation burns. The children were transported to be examined and treated for smoke inhalation
Moon said the family fled to a lot across the alley on South Seventh Street and weren't immediately found by firefighters.
There was power to the building, Moon said, but for some reason the family was using a candle for light.
The candle fell over and triggered the fire, he said.
Firemen from Taft, Fellows, McKittrick and Maricopa responded to the fire.
Total damage is estimated at $60,000.
Earlier in the evening firefighters responded to numerous fireworks-related calls, including a small grass fire off West Ash Street near Standard Street.
On Saturday night, firefighters from several stations extinguished a 43-acre grass fire on Elk Hills.
