A dozen Taft City School District teachers will be formally laid off Wednesday night when the Board of Trustees holds its monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m. in the Education Center.
All of them were among the 16 who received layoff notices in March.
The teacher layoffs are among jobs being axed in the face of severe budget cuts precipitated by one of California's worst fiscal crises.
Teachers on the list include Andria Rogers, Kellie Shuford, Katrena Guess, Shannon Barnes, Amy Hill, Nicole King, Ashley McDonald, Steven Neal, Melissa Renfro-Vierra, Caitlin Sodergren, Laura Wong and Katherine Cooper.
The dismissals are effective July 1.
Another teacher, Gwen Schroeder, successfully appealed her dismissal notice and will be retained for the next school year, an administrative law judge has ruled.
Further budget cuts may be necessary.
The board will scrutinize a preliminary budget report that will be presented by district Business Manager Adele Ward.
The district also is discussing closing Jefferson School in Ford City.
Talks are underway for the Maricopa Head Start program to move into the facility if the Taft City School District decides to close the campus, which is one of four elementary schools in the district.
Trustees also will get an update from Supt. Mike Brusa on talks with the Elk Hills School District on possibly merging the two districts
