The California Highway Patrol is investigating the fatal off-road accident that killed a man in eastern San Luis Obispo County Friday evening.
Very little information, including the victim’s name and details of the crash, are available.
The CHP’s Templeton office was notified of the crash Monday morning, said Officer Bill Irons, and the investigation is just in the early stages.
“There’s not a whole lot of information,” Irons said. “The fatality did occur in an off-road accident and that’s about all I can tell you.”
More information may be available Tuesday, the CHP officer said
The victim was riding with friends near Soda Lake road, apparently near the south end of Carrizo Plain, when he drove into a sharp ravine or crevice.
Some friends stayed with the victims while others went to the top of the temblor Range to get in an area with cell phone service and called for help.
The came down to the top of 25 Hill and met rescuers about 5:30 p.m.
A Kern County Sheriff’s helicopter responded and, with the help of one of the victim’s friends, located the accident scene.
The helicopter made several trips to Taft Airport Friday night to bring the friends out of the remote area.
