You won't find anyone anywhere who is prouder to be a Taftian than Randy Miller.
Taft's Mayor is one of its biggest boosters and always brags about his hometown.
But there's one thing about Taft that he doesn't like -- a brief part of its past.
Taft, as almost everyone knows, was once called Moron way back in the early 20th century.
Originally named Moro, the “n” was added at the end to prevent confusion with Morro Bay, the story goes.
To many its just a humorous historical footnote.
But to Miller its no laughing matter.
So he is no longer going to be involved in the Moron Golf tournament.
He told the tournament director (Brad Cross) that he will no longer participate in the annual tournament that brings Taft High grads back to Taft each summer for a round of golf and a lot of fun and reminiscing.
He's through with the tournament until it changes its name.
“I just cannot stand that name,” Miller said. “ I just could not sponsor or be a part of that tournament any more.”
He's not asking for a boycott, just making a statement.
“If you want to continue to do that, do so,” he said.
Miller's brother Rich is also very active in the Moron Tournament, but takes a slightly less strident approach to the name.
Besides, he said, Moron Golf Tournament hats are more interesting than hats than, say, “Taft Memorial Golf.”
So Rich Miller is still involved with it.
But he added that there are a lot of other TUHS alumni that share Randy's feelings.
This isn't the first time Randy Miller has spoken out about dropping Moron from the community vocabulary.
In April, at the annual State of the City Luncheon, he fired his opening salvo against Moron references.
“Get over it, get rid of it, expunge it from your vocabulary,” he said. “We don’t need to be reminded of it anymore. It certainly does not represent who we are and where we want to go.”
