The top disc golfers from around the region will be coming to Taft this weekend for a major tournament.
They'll be taking part in the Taft Christmas Countdown at the Franklin Field Recreation Complex.
Recreation Supervisor Les Clark III said the event, part of the Central Valley Disc Golf Series, will attract 100 competitors for two rounds on the 18-hole course.
Competition starts at 9 a.m.
Disc golfers will compete in several divisions, including pro, advanced and intermediate amateur, grand master, and a junior.
Clark said more than 100 family members and friends will come to Taft with the competitors, and this underscores the city's need for more motel and hotel rooms.
“There are people coming from as far away as Sacramento,” Clark said. “They'll probably fill up hotel rooms. We could house even more if we had more hotel rooms.”
The disc golf tournament is one of a number of sporting events the district hosts that brings people to Taft but leaves them with few places to stay.
There are softball, basketball and whiffle ball tournaments coming up.
Taft is a popular spot because it has four softball fields located together.
“Next weekend we'll have more than 200 people,” Clark said. “If we had hotels, we could fill them every week.”
