Emmons Park Drive – the street that curves through the Taft College campus connecting Ash/Taylor streets with Sixth Street – will be closed off to through traffic on Aug. 1.
The permanent closure will pave the way for a campus construction project aimed at building a new state-funded $13.4 million home for the college’s heralded Transition to Independent Living (TIL) program.
The TIL Center’s footprint will reach into the street right of way, so Emmons will be blocked off at its intersection with Ash.  That portion of the street is college property.
There will, however, be access to the college’s main parking lot from Ash Street.
A turnaround “knuckle” will be created in front of the library so traffic westbound on Emmons from Sixth and Seventh streets will be able to access the campus.
That portion of Emmons will be repaved as part of the project and stop signs will be added at Emmons and Sixth in front of the Taft City School District Education Center.
That intersection is especially busy during school hours with foot traffic for Lincoln Junior High, Roosevelt School, Taft High and Taft College all using the crosswalk.
All three school districts and the City of Taft endorsed the idea of a three-way stop for pedestrian safety.
At present only eastbound traffic on Emmons has a stop sign.
