The Taft Oilworker Monument is going is going to be spotlighted in Bakersfield.
A model of the large bonze sculpture will be on display in the Kern County
Administrative Center at 1115 Truxtun Ave. in Bakersfield starting Tuesday and the Kern County Board of Supervisors is going to pass a resolution of support for the project at its Tuesday meeting.
A committee has been working for two years for fundraising and design of a memorial to the men and women who built the oil industry.
A maquette, or model of the monument, which will be built by nationally known sculptor Benjamin Victor, will be unveiled at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday in the rotunda of the county office building.
The committee is will over half way to its fundraising goal of $800,000, which would allow it to build the tallest bronze sculpture in California.
Major donors for the project have been Chevron, General Production and Accelerated Environmental.
Aera Energy has also promised $100,000 when the fundraising gets within $100,000 of its goal.
The sculpture is scheduled to be completed in time to be dedicated at the 2010 Oildorado Celebration.
