January 12, 1921 – June 7, 2017

Mary McGuire went to be with our Lord on June 7, 2017 at the age of 96. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 14, 2017 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Doughty-Calhoun-O’Meara, 1100 Truxtun Avenue. Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, June 15, 9:00 AM at St. Philip the Apostle Church, 7100 Stockdale Highway. Rosary will precede the Mass, beginning at 8:30 AM. Burial will immediately follow the Mass at Westside District Cemetery, 440 Cedar Street, Taft.
Mary was born in Acorn, Missouri on January 12, 1921, the seventh of nine children to John and Myrtle Lewis. At the age of two, she moved with her parents and surviving siblings to Fellows. She graduated from Taft Union High School (Class of 1938) and Taft College. On June 28, 1941, she married Jack McGuire, to whom she was married until his death in 1990.
Mary was a homemaker and mother to daughter Lorraine, sons Mike and John, and daughter Melinda who died shortly after birth. Jack’s job with Standard Oil required moves around California and to Kenai, Alaska. At each locale, Mary volunteered at her children’s schools, participated in charitable groups, and was a dedicated parishioner of the local Catholic church.
Jack and Mary returned to Bakersfield in the early ‘80s. They were active parishioners of St. Philip the Apostle Church. Mary enjoyed crossword puzzles, shopping, baking, and traveling, and considered Alaska one of her favorite destinations. She was also a charter resident of Glenwood Gardens (now Brookdale Riverwalk).
Mary is survived by sister Mable Mitchell; children Lorraine Crane, Mike McGuire, and John McGuire (Sandra); seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Our most sincere thanks to the staff of Clare Bridge at Brookdale Riverwalk for their excellent care of Mary. Thank you, also, to Dr. Tommy Lee and Dr. Emmanuel Strategos, and to Optimal Hospice for their caring support in Mary’s final days.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the charity of your choosing.
