June 26, 1926 – August 15, 2017
Fred Martinez was born in Taft, California on June 26, 1926 to Ruben Martinez and Clara Martinez (LaVigne) and passed August 15, 2017 in Bakersfield, CA. When he was just 17, he joined the navy and proudly served during WWII. After his time in the military, he met and married Betty Ryan. Two years later they had their first son, Steven and, three years later, they had their second son, Gary. They moved to New Cuyama, CA where they lived from 1952-2009. Fred and Betty had a wonderful marriage until her death in April 2016. Fred loved living in the Cuyama Valley, which he considered to be heaven on earth; this might be the one thing Fred and Betty fought about. She would have rather lived somewhere she could shop. Fred retired from Arco in 1985 when he was fifty-nine. Some of his hobbies included chopping firewood, carpentry, walking, attending church and spending time with his family. Fred was a charter member of the New Cuyama Assembly Church of God and was a man who loved the Lord and loved to share God’s love with everyone he met. He is survived by sons Steven (Debbie) and Gary, three granddaughters: Alicia Holland (Bill), Stacy Lackey (Mike), Alejandra Virgilio (Tony); eight great-grandchildren: Mariah and Dylan Scovel, Seth Lackey, Bryan Virgilio, Braden Holland, Hunter Virgilio, Taylor Virgilio, Stevie Jean Virgilio and Ryan Lackey. A graveside service will be held at the West Side District Cemetery August 23rd at 10:00 under the direction of Erickson and Brown Funeral Home. There will be no viewing. The family would like to thank Anita Sparks for being such an amazing caregiver and friend to Fred for the last few years.
