1960 – 2017
John Mitchell was born October 15, 1960. He told everyone the City of Taft threw a party for his birth, and there was a grand parade outside his hospital room. He was born during Taft's 50th Oildorado celebration. As a lifelong resident of Taft, CA, many people came to know and respect him. Many were blessed to call him a friend, and few were lucky enough to be his family.
He married the woman who would be his wife for 33 years in 1984. They spent their years raising their family, camping, hunting, fishing, and gambling. He was a lifelong oilfield man and never went any amount of time without working. He could pull apart and put back together any machine, build anything out of wood, and weld a bead with the best of them. He was honest, hardworking, dependable, strong, and loving. All the very best things you could have in a person.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Susan Mitchell; his sisters, Lori Scallins and Cherry Sills; his best friend, Harold Abrams; his father, Robert Mitchell; and his stepfather, Joe Ciaramitaro. He leaves behind his mom, Bonnie Ciaramitaro; his sister and brother-in-law, Becky and Dick Hutchison; his brother and sister-in-law, Cam and Cathy Sills; and brother, Mel Sills; his children, Paul, Michelle, Peter Salazar, Amy and John Mitchell; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, especially Robert and Ryan Salazar, who spent so much time these last few years hunting and camping with him; and a whole Moose Lodge of friends.
He will be missed by so many more.
No visitation is scheduled. A graveside service will be held at the West Side District Cemetery in Taft on Friday, October 13, 2017, at 3:00 p.m.
